Home Fashion Guide: Organic Echo

Home Fashion Guide: Organic Echo

There are a few sites that provide organic home products that I love browsing and shopping regularly. My newest favorite is Organic Echo. This awesome online shop doesn’t just sell home products – they have some of my favorite things for baby, kids, mom, and dad! And I am not just saying that …

I mentioned the other day that I would be sharing my finds with you for a Home Fashion Guide, I thought I would share with you some items from Organic Echo that I think are a must-have:

Organic Cotton Sateen Sheets

If you have ever slept on organic cotton sheets, you know how incredible they are. We use them, so should the baby, too? I am big on natural and white for sheets, towels, etc. I’m not sure why, but there is just something clean and, well – natural, about those colors. So these organic cotton sateen sheets in natural are perfection to me! Soft, smooth, light and comfortable. They cost an arm and a leg most places, but Organic Echo has them at the best prices I’ve seen. Every bedroom should have a set.

Bolga Basket

The Bolga Basket from Organic Echo is one of my favorite things ever! I love throwing in a unique piece or a splash of color in unexpected ways. This piece is both. This gorgeous basket could serve so many purposes: a decorative basket on a shelf, magazine holder, a fun bread basket, and so much more. This basket is gorgeous, ethnic, colorful, and fun! It is both useful and decorative. It is a great piece for any home.

Organic Cotton Wash Cloth

I knitted up a few of these for Christmas gifts, but these are WAY better and far less expensive! You should be using organic fabrics anyway, but especially on the cloth washing your face and body. At only $4 each, there is no excuse not to buy at least one for every member of your family. Organic cotton is so soft and it is not harsh on sensitive skin. Organic Echo carries several items just for the bath.

One of my favorite things about this shop? It is a mom-business. I LOVE supporting family- and mom-owned businesses, and the customer service from Organic Echo is exactly why! I can’t say enough wonderful things about this company.

FROM THEIR SITE:

Living an eco-friendly lifestyle and consuming organically made products is the best decision one can make, especially for kids. But living ‘Green’ need not be boring and simplistic. Nature is full of vibrant colors and intricate patterns. But most people find it difficult to buy natural products which are stylish, colorful and unique. We at Organic Echo are dedicated to bring vibrant, fashionable and stylish products for your natural lifestyle choices.

Organic Chocolate Milk!?

*** UPDATE 4/12/2011: This product has since been found to contain substances not approved by the laws that govern organic products. I strongly recommend reading more (see following link) prior to purchasing this product for your family:
http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/03/challenge-to-horizon-organics-new-dha-fortified-milk/ ***

Since I was pregnant with my firstborn, I knew my kids would only have organic milk from the time they made the switch. There were too many studies out relating the antibiotics and hormones given to cows to the rapid growth of cancer, attention-disorders, and early puberty in today’s children.

Not only did I know that I would be sure to provide organic foods and milk, but I would try to provide as much DHA in their diet (and mine) as possible. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid proven to support brain, heart and eye function. (You can read more about that here.)

Rewind back to the 1980′s and 90′s, my childhood. Chocolate milk was a favorite drink at snack times and after dinner. We stirred chocolate syrup into our plain white milk. And, if we were especially lucky, mom bought the chocolate milk in a carton! It was rich, thick, and not organic.

Of course I want to share the things I loved as a kid with my children. What I don’t want to share with my children is the bad part of those “wonderful” things I loved.

Chocolate milk is not a common item in our refrigerator, but Horizon Organic Milk is. So, you can imagine the excitement of my 8yo when she opened the fridge door to find Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk staring back at her. I poured a glass for each of us, as I explained we were testing it for my blog readers. Even the hub got in on the taste test.

We all agreed that this was really good, really light chocolate milk. You know that thick coating it can leave? Well the Horizon Chocolate Milk did not leave any of that, nor did it leave a tummyache from being overly rich. We all (except the baby) enjoyed every last drop.

How brilliant is Horizon for providing chocolate milk that is organic, but also has DHA? It certainly takes the guilt out of providing this little treat. Although chocolate milk is not a regularly occurring drink option in our home, I can say we’ll be buying Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk from now on when we do buy it.

Organic Skincare for You

Organic Skincare for You

Millions of chemicals seep into our bodies over the course of our lifetime … chemicals that can cause all sorts of harm. As you are probably aware, I am still breastfeeding my youngster and it only makes sense that what I put on and in my body goes to her as well. So, I was thrilled when Jim Kueny from ONEgroup/Miessence contacted me to try some of their products. I had heard about Miessence, but had never tried anything made by them. I will try to break the info in this post down to the essentials along with an overview of my thoughts on the products I tried.

There are many chemicals in the everyday products you use that can cause harm. This was included in the MiTme Newsletter (the ONEgroup/Miessence newsletter):

ABOUT ONEgroup (from their website):
Organic and Natural Enterprise Group (or ONEgroup) is an Australian based company who creates and manufactures the world’s first Certified Organic skincare, haircare, personal care, health care and cosmetic products. ONEgroup’s range of products stand in a class of their own by being independently certified to international food grade standards by some of the world’s most respected organic certifying organisations, namely, Australian Certified Organic (ACO), the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and IFOAM (Europe).

I tested 3 of their skincare products:
AROMA FREE ROLL-ON DEODORANT
• No Aluminum (aluminum is a toxin linked to Alzheimer’s disease)
• Based on bi-carb soda (bicaronate of soda neutralizes bacteria that causes odors)
• Natural antibacterial ingredients
• Doesn’t block pores
• Effective long lasting deodorant that actually works!
• Certified organic
• 3 varieties to choose from:
Ancient Spice – a blend of fresh citrus and spices.
Tahitian Breeze – a blend of intense floral and citrus
Aroma Free- no essential oils added

Honestly, at first I didn’t really love this product. I was used to using a deodorant that was scented. It also seemed as though my old deodorant was lasting all day because it took a good scrub to wash off in the shower. I used the Miessence aroma free roll-on deodorant for a few days and discovered a slight sting after shaving. I emailed Jim about it. He emailed the formulator asking about it and she responded! Wow! Turns out the slight sting after shaving is due to the bicarb and the fact that my old deodorant had some sort of numbing agent in it.

I decided to keep using the deodorant to give it another shot. Now it is all I wear. I feel clean and fresh when I apply and still at the end of the day. On days where I am super-active, I apply a second time to insure freshness. This was
something I’ve always done anyway, so nothing new there. The only difference? I smell like me (remember I use the aroma free) and I’m not applying any harmful chemicals to my underarms. I feel good knowing that, especially since I know that nothing from my deodorant is getting into the ducts that make and supply milk to my little one.

TRANSLUCENT FOUNDATION
• Evens out the complexion
• Translucent natural coverage
• Contains zinc oxide (known for its superior sun protection capabilities and preventing skin damage, the safest and most effective ingredient that protects the skin against UVA rays)
• Keeps skin hydrated and protected from pollution
• Natural mineral colours in four different shades
• Certified organic ingredients

I am a makeup snob, I’m not going to lie. I was hesitant to try this foundation for several reasons: (1) I don’t wear liquid foundation; (2) my face can be sensitive to new products; and (3) I don’t wear makeup on a regular basis. But I decided to try it anyway. It went on smooth and even. It blended with my complexion beautifully. It was so lightweight that by the end of the day I had forgotten I was wearing it. My sensitive skin looked like I had simply worn moisturizer all day – no break outs, no oiliness.

SKIN CONDITIONER
• Nutrient rich active ingredients makes this a vital step!
• Replaces the use of a toner with an alcohol-free herbal infusion
• Dual purpose – feeds the skin, and provides hydration base for moisturiser to seal in
• Moisturiser will last longer
• Balancing – nourishes and tones
• Rejuvenating – energises and stimulates
• Soothing – calms redness and soothes
• Purifying – balances secretions and purifies
• Pat onto skin and leave to absorb for a few seconds before applying moisturizer
• Certified Organic

Again, I was a bit hesitant to try something new in my facial skincare routine, but I did it anyway (just for you wonderful readers). And am I glad I did! I wish I had gotten more of this stuff. There are days where my skin is dry and I feel like I am applying moisturizer all day long. And because it is dry, it is sometimes spotted with redness. And to top it off, my pores are large (great for looking young, terrible for soaking in everything that goes on my face). The skin conditioner did just that – conditioned my skin. The redness faded and the moisturizer stayed put. Especially on days when I wore no makeup, this kept me feeling confident that my skin still looked great. Bonus points for making me feel like the beginnings of aging are paused every time I wear it!

Miessence makes a huge line of skincare and makeup products. If the rest of their products are anything like these three, I would recommend them all.

BabyLegs Review & Giveaway

BabyLegs Review & Giveaway

When I was pregnant with the baby I was hunting for all the fun baby things a new mom searches for. Granted, this was my second pregnancy, but it had been 7 years! I ran across BabyLegs one night and automatically knew I needed these for the baby. After getting them and using them, I can tell you firsthand that these are a must-have for any new mom.

Our first pair served as both leg warmers and then leg protectors as the little one began crawling. It was great to know that her little legs wouldn’t get bruised crawling around on the hardwood floors. And, of course, they were the perfect knee pads when she decided to get into everything!

LIl'bit in her 1st pair of BabyLegs

Now that we’ve graduated to walking, we have accumulated several pairs. At 13 months lil’bit decided she wants to try using the potty. Let me tell you how handy BabyLegs have been during the past couple weeks of that! Paired with a long-sleeved onesie, they keep her warm while still allowing for a quick run to the potty.

There are so many great ways to wear these fantastic little things!  And BabyLegs make more than just these cute little leg warmers:  they make baby socks and girls’ tights too!
